What’s the difference between a great resume and an average resume?

How do you write a masterpiece of a resume?

Resume Writing is a Skill You Should Master

Resume writing is first critical skill that you will need to master in order to get the best results for your job search.  Your resume is the first introduction you have to potential employers, and the old adage that “you get only one opportunity to make a good first impression” has never been truer.

Your Gateway to That Great Next Job

Think of your resume as the key that unlocks the interview gate. No interest equals no interview which equals no chance to even be in the ball game.  That’s where learning how to write resumes becomes vital to your career.

Three Reasons Your Resume Gets Rejected

Basically, there are only three reasons your resume get rejected.

  1. You’ve applied to a job that you’re not qualified for.
  2. The job you’ve applied to has been filled, or has been placed on hold status.
  3. You have a resume failure.

How to Overcome Reason Number 3

You shouldn’t be applying for jobs that don’t match your background and experience and when jobs are no longer available there’s little that can be done about that.

According to my 40 plus years of recruiting experience, you’re experiencing some sort of resume failure about 83% of the time.  If you don’t like my percentage, reduce it by 75% and you still are missing many interview opportunities.

The key to reducing that percentage is to understand what is going on in the mind of the reader and be sure your resume is in sync with their thought process.  This requires a very specialized form of copywriting that almost everyone can learn rather quickly.  This is in direct conflict with what professional resume writers tell you.

That skill can be taught and that’s what is covered in my Free Video Mini-series and in more depth in my eBook.

In Conclusion

You may be the best candidate, but you won’t get the job unless your resume and interview skills stand out and impress employers.  We’ll deal with the interview another time, but today it’s time to get your resume the best it can be.

Keep in mind that your resume is a selling tool outlining your skills and experience so a prospective employer can see, at a glance, how you can potentially contribute to their workplace.
